The Telephony line is composed of two products, the LincXpress Multiplexer (LXM) and the LincXpress Concentrator (LXC). The system utilizes an enhanced version of the Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) technology that has been used by the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs) since the early 1970s. As a result, operators can now deliver telephone service similar to RBOCs in quality and reliability. Compatibility with existing telephony transmission protocols also ensures seamless delivery of calling features such as Caller ID, Call Waiting, and Three-Way Calling that residents demand and are accustomed to. Telephony operational expenses are only incremental to existing cable operations and is marginal since the product is designed per carrier class telephony specifications with very high availability rate and very low maintenance requirements.
The LXM accepts up to 48 analog telephone signals from residents' telephone sets over existing telephone wiring located as far away as 4 miles, and converts them into a digital format. The digitized signals are then multiplexed and transmitted to the LincXpress Concentrator. Each LincXpress Concentrator grooms 576 digitized phone channels and routes them, through T1 facilities, to a local class 5 switch. The modular design of the system allows for economical growth from tens to thousands of phone lines on the same platform by adding LXCs and LXMs on a pay-as-you-grow arrangement. The future-oriented design and the plug-and-play application cards allow for streamlined integration of new technologies such as VoIP quickly and cost effectively. The system can be installed on a standard telecom rack in an indoor utility closet and is backed up with batteries to ensure life-line telephone service in the event of a public power outage. The existing home-run telephone wiring is all that is needed to provide dial tone at a resident's premise. System operation, including activation and deactivation of phone lines, is achieved through LincXpress Network Management System software and can be performed remotely for increased operating efficiency and simplified system management.
